Zsofia Duarte, a 2014 graduate of Deering high school is working with The Center for Wisdom's Women in Lewiston, Maine to develop a volunteer program as part of her short term program of study at Bates College. The Bates College Short Term is a five-week, intensive period of academic study, research, and exploration for students both on and off campus.

Courtney Porfido of Ramsey, N.J. has partnered with Central Maine Medical Center to chronicle the history of nursing at the hospital as part of her short term program of study at Bates College.

In all, Bates honored 10 men and 10 women from the Class of 2019 on the basis of leadership potential, academic excellence and promise, and service to the college community. These individuals earned an average GPA of 3.87, made a rich diversity of extracurricular contributions and submitted thoughtful essays in support of their candidacy.

Bates College graduated 462 students from 32 states and 43 countries. Cumulatively, the Class of 2016 performed 17,500 hours of community service, exemplifying Bates' commitment to community learning and civic action.

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program recently awarded 14 fellowships, both English teaching assistantships and research-study grants, to 11 Bates students and three alumni.

Bantu Mabaso awarded a Davis Projects for Peace grant to start a mentorship initiative to combat food shortages, especially during dry seasons, in the rural community of Phalala, Swaziland.

Miles Schelling awarded a Davis Projects for Peace grant to start an after-school program in a remote Himalayan village.

Kelsey Schober, a Bates College senior from Sutton, Alaska, has been awarded a 2016-17 Watson Fellowship to support a year of travel and independent research in the Netherlands, South Africa, Canada and Chile.

To receive NESCAC All-Academic honors, an athlete must have reached sophomore academic standing and be a varsity letter winner with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.35.

Emily Bacon, a member of the women's cross country team at Bates College, received New England Small College Athletic Conference All-Academic distinction for the fall 2015 season.

The New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) All-Academic honor is awarded to Bates varsity letter winners who have reached sophomore academic standing with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.35.

The NESCAC All-Sportsmanship team is composed of one student athlete from each institution for each sport, and members are selected by the players and coached from each team for their positive contributions to sportsmanship.

The production, which ran from Nov. 5-9 at Schaeffer Theatre at Bates, gave students a firsthand glimpse into the playwriting process.

More than 60 Bates College students are serving as Junior Advisors, Resident Coordinators and Resident Coordinator Team Leaders for the 2015-16 academic year, acting as both leaders and role models for students settling into residential life at Bates.

The fellows program, in its second year at the college, is intended to promote academic excellence and build community for all students with a particular focus on students from underrepresented populations. Fellows went through a rigorous application process in the spring to qualify for their fall appointment, and are trained to answer questions and offer support for their fellow students.

Each year, Bates College selects 10 men and 10 women from its first year class to receive the Charles A. Dana award, lauding their academic excellence and rich contributions to campus life.

This is a distinction earned by students whose cumulative grade point average is 3.71 or higher.
