Thomas J. Watson Fellowship

Bates College senior Adilene Sandoval, a double major in environmental studies and sociology from Mattawa, Wash., is a recipient of the Thomas J. Watson Fellowship for international travel. Sandoval is one of 42 graduating seniors from 33 colleges around the United States to win this prestigious fellowship. Sandoval will travel to Australia, Ethiopia, Italy,Colombia, El Salvador, and Guatemala "to explore trauma-healing models informed by both activism and holistic healing to create, sustain and protect community-wellbeing from colonial violence. I will learn from communities that are using place-based strategies that facilitate healing through a wide range of frameworks and practices."

Thomas J. Watson Foundation fellowship

Elizabeth LaCroix '23 of Richmond, R.I. is among 42 graduating seniors from 33 U.S. colleges receiving grants from the Thomas J. Watson Foundation for international travel and exploration in 2023-24. A double major in English and chemistry, LaCroix will travel to Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, Ecuador, China, and India for her project, "The Global Story of Menstrual Pain." Drawing from her own personal experiences, she will collect stories on the subject of menstrual pain from patients, doctors, and researchers to create a global perspective on the issue.

Aaliyah Moore, a graduate of Central High School in Phoenix and junior at Bates College, wins a prestigious Truman Scholarship

Aaliyah Moore, a graduate of Central High School in Phoenix and junior at Bates College, has won a prestigious Truman Scholarship. According to Bates College, Moore will pursue graduate studies to build her skills in advocacy, research, and education, then tackle systematic disparities within the U.S. legal and foster-care systems. Federally funded Truman Scholarships, which are awarded to students with demonstrated leadership potential and a commitment to public service, are considered among the most important U.S. graduate fellowships. Moore is one of 62 recipients of a Truman Scholarship from more than 700 applicants this year. The scholarships provide up to $30,000 for graduate study as well as leadership training, career and graduate school counseling, and federal government internship opportunities.
