Six members of Bates College's Brooks Quimby Debate Council traveled to Cape Town, South Africa, where they participated in The World Universities Debating Championship (WUDC), the largest debate competition in the world.

Inspired by a phrase from the Bates College mission statement, eight Bates students will address the concept of the "transformative power of our differences" in the college's first homegrown TED-style event at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, in Bates' Schaeffer Theatre.

Jac Stewart and his teammate Taylor Blackburn defeated final-round teams from Yale, Cornell and Loyola Marymount to win the national title at the U.S. Universities Debating Championship on April 13 at Purdue University.

Taylor Blackburn '15 and Jac Stewart '14 ended a strong Bates debate season by defeating final-round teams from Yale, Cornell and Loyola Marymount to win the national title at the 2014 U.S. Universities Debating Championship.

Seaman-Grant's best-in-the-nation standing follows first-place novice speaker awards at the Stanford University tournament on March 8, the Wellesley College tournament on Feb. 8 and the Providence College tournament on Jan. 31.

Matt Kahn, a member of the Brooks Quimby Debate Council at Bates College, has been ranked among the top-10 U.S. collegiate novice debaters this year.

In early January 2014, Jack Stewart and his teammate Taylor Blackburn competed in the World Universities Debate Championships in Chennai, India, where they were ranked 21st in the world.

Taylor Blackburn, a member of the Brooks Quimby Debate Council at Bates College, has been ranked among the top-10 U.S. collegiate debaters in 2013-14.
