Rex set to make NCAA Championship debut in the weight throw

Lewiston, ME (03/05/2019) — Mar 04, 2019

LEWISTON, Maine -- Sophomore John Rex of Andover, Mass., will represent the Bates men's track and field team at this week's NCAA Division III Indoor Championships, taking place at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.

Rex (Andover, Mass.) qualified for his first NCAA Championship meet in the 35-pound weight throw. He will be the 19th seed in the event, based on his season-best mark of 59 feet, 9.5 inches (18.22 meters), which earned him the Maine state title in the event on Feb. 2. Rex is the latest in a long line of Bobcat throwers to compete in the weight throw at NCAAs, the most recent being Adedire Fakorede in 2018.

Remarkably, all of the other 19 athletes in the field are either juniors or seniors.

The men's weight throw is scheduled to start at 6:45pm on Friday. There will be two preliminary flights, with the top nine advancing to the finals afterward.
