Women's swimming places five on Scholar All-America list

Lewiston, ME (07/03/2019) — COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Five students from the Bates women's swimming and diving team were honored with 2019 Scholar All-America awards from the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) on Monday, with the women's and men's squad receiving Team Scholar All-America recognition as well.

CSCAA Selects 1,221 for Scholar All-America Team

The award recognizes students that have achieved a grade point average of 3.50 or higher and competed at their respective NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.

Rhetoric major Caroline Apathy '21 (Devon, Pa.), mathematics major Emmy Daigle '20 (Portland, Ore.), economics major Lucy Faust '19 (Piedmont, Calif.), psychology major Janika Ho '20 (Los Angeles, Calif.) and rising sophomore Caroline Sweeney (New Canaan, Conn.) all earned a spot on the 2019 CSCAA Scholar All-America list.

Faust, a team captain this past season and a three-time All-American, earns Scholar All-America honors for the third time in her career. Ho, a 12-time All-American, earns Scholar All-America honors for the third straight year.

Apathy, a 10-time All-American, Daigle, a two-time All-American and Sweeney, also a two-time All-American, are all first-time selections to the Scholar All-America list.

The Bates men's and women's swimming and diving teams are two of 480 nationwide to receive team Scholar All-America recognition from the CSCAA, for earning an average grade point average of 3.0 or higher during the Winter/Spring of 2019. In NCAA Division III, 134 men's and 185 women's teams were honored. The Bates women's team achieved a GPA of 3.37 and the men's team checked in with a GPA of 3.19.

At the 2019 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, Bates' contingent of nine swimmers combined to score 53.5 points to finish 20th among 50 scoring teams -- the Bobcats' sixth top-20 national finish in a row.
