Tiago Correia Named Dana Scholar at Bates

2014 Oct 2

Tiago Correia, the son of Maria Suzete P. Jorge of Oeiras, Portugal, and Abel H. Correia of Carcavelos, Portugal, and a 2012 graduate of the Quinta do Marques School, has been named a Dana Scholar at Bates College. He is majoring in physics and mathematics at Bates.

The Charles A. Dana award honors select first-year students for their academic excellence and their contributions to campus life. The award, made possible by the Dana Foundation of New York City, is given to 10 men and 10 women, and is the highest honor bestowed upon first-year students at Bates. These students retain the honor throughout their careers at the college.

This year's Dana Scholars earned an average GPA of 3.87 and "had a rich diversity of co-curricular contributions," said Associate Dean of Students Stephen W. Sawyer.

In addition to the Dana Scholar program, Bates' Dana Chemistry Hall was built with assistance from the Dana Foundation, and seven Bates faculty members are Charles A. Dana Professors, among the most prestigious honors the college bestows.

Located in Lewiston, Maine, Bates is internationally recognized as a leading college of the liberal arts, attracting 2,000 students from across the U.S. and around the world. Since 1855, Bates has been dedicated to educating the whole person through creative and rigorous scholarship in a collaborative residential community. With a commitment to affordability, Bates has always admitted students without regard to gender, race, religion or national origin. Cultivating intellectual discovery and informed civic action, Bates prepares leaders sustained by a love of learning and zeal for responsible stewardship of the wider world.
