KIPP Academy grad creating social justice group for girls of color

2018 May 3

Angela Eustache of Lynn, Mass., a 2016 graduate of KIPP Academy, is working with YWCA in Central Maine as part of her short term program of study at Bates College. The Bates College Short Term is a five-week, intensive period of academic study, research, and exploration for students both on and off campus.

Eustache is part of the Action/Research team working with local nonprofits through the college's Harward Center for Community Partnerships. In coordination with Harward Center staff, the Action/Research team conducts extensive research, including creating and administering surveys, collecting oral histories, and designing volunteer programs. At the conclusion of short term, the students will present a report and recommendations to their community partners.

Eustache's Community Partner, YWCA Central Maine, is an organization that works to eliminate racism and empower women.

The new program will be for girls of color in grades 4-6 who attend the YWCA's after school program. It will be led by women of color and help girls of color talk and learn about identity, social justice, activism, self-care, local and state history, and immigration.

Eustache will be managing preliminary research, developing a program and curriculum, conducting outreach to the Oakland-based Radical Monarchs program, and creating a badge program.
