Bates student Katie Ailes awarded Fulbright grant

Recent Bates College graduate Katie Ailes of Swarthmore, Pa., has been awarded a Fulbright grant to support an academic year of research abroad. The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is funded primarily by the U.S. Department of State and sends some 1,500 citizens abroad each year to more than 155 countries. With 28 graduates having received Fulbrights in the past three years, Bates is a "top producer" of Fulbright U.S. Student grants, ranking among the top 10 U.S. bachelor's degree colleges.

Ailes, the daughter of Mr. Richard C. Ailes and Ms. Shirley J. Dodson of Swarthmore, Pa., is a 2010 graduate of Strath Haven High School. She majored in English and dance at Bates and, through her grant, will enter the Masters of Research program at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland.
