2013 Dec 18

Anne Schwarzwalder, the child of Mr. and Mrs. Monte L. Schwarzwalder of Columbia, Md., and a 2011 graduate of Wilde Lake High School, participated in the fall 2013 Bates College Semester in St. Petersburg, Russia, program.

The Bates Fall Semester in St. Petersburg, Russia, program offers students an opportunity to live for a semester among St. Petersburg's people and discover their city, its history and its cultural life, while studying the Russian language. After an orientation to Russian language and culture, Bates students continue their language studies at the Derzhavin Institute in St. Petersburg and travel to important historical locations, including Novgorod, Moscow and the Black Sea region to visit the Crimean peninsula in Ukraine.

About 60 percent of Bates students study abroad, and Bates offers access to academically rigorous and culturally enriching study-abroad programs in more than 80 countries.

Located in Lewiston, Maine, Bates is internationally recognized as a leading college of the liberal arts, attracting 2,000 students from across the U.S. and around the world. Since 1855, Bates has been dedicated to educating the whole person through creative and rigorous scholarship in a collaborative residential community. With a commitment to affordability, Bates has always admitted students without regard to gender, race, religion or national origin. Cultivating intellectual discovery and informed civic action, Bates prepares leaders sustained by a love of learning and zeal for responsible stewardship of the wider world.
